I also like the pulley system which was stock with the 26S - for the same reason that I can help the mast initially when forces are the highest and all the tangles are typically best dealt with from the rear and you can be back in the rear pulling the rope.
The one thing I did to my system was to make a mod where the top of the gin pole has a ss cable with a high load quick clip. I have a bail on the mast about 7.5 feet up (not sure of exact dimensions - its as high as I can reach up) so the gin pole is pulling directly on the mast. I got this idea from the system on the 26M.
The nice thing about this is that I can get the mast good and tight with the gin pole and pulleys and then its a very simple easy piece of cake to pin the forstay as there is not tension on it..
When I get the forestay pinned, I just unclip the gin pole from the mast and just set the gin pole down on the deck - where it remains while I'm sailing (which could be a few hours or a week).
