I expect this will be met with cheers from those who struggle with the current system and jeers from those who don't. But participation seems to be down across all TSBB forums and I believe the current, vintage 1990's login system is the reason why.
Here's what the new system will provide:
- True forum login. You'll go to a login screen and enter your username and password. Once logged in, you remain logged in for 365 days (unless, of course, you delete your cookies). And, you will not be required to enter a username, password, or capcha on the posting form. One and done.
- Cookies must be allowed or you won't be able to post.
- If you forget your username or password an automated system will email them to you instantly.
- We will be able to view your password in order to help in case of problems. (We recommend using a password that won't accidentally give us access to your Apple Computer stock.)
- Editing your profile will be simple, with no confusion about "remember password" or whether or not you can change your username yourself (you can't).
- Clear and meaningful error messages if login fails.
- A more intuitive method of registration.
- Clear messages that registration is required -- before you try to post.
Bottom line, the learning curve is minimal and the improvement should be significant.
But is it all good news? Nah. You know better than that.
The bad news
- The current system encrypts passwords in a way that doesn't allow us to decrypt them. I know that sounds bizarre but it's true. This means we will have to assign you a temporary password that's different than what you have now.
We will email a temporary password to the address in your registration.
Alternatively, you will be able to quickly and easily email it to yourself if your login fails.
- No matter how much testing we do up front the conversion is bound to cause some instability when we install it. We expect to do that over the weekend so if you're having trouble posting please contact us here:

Meanwhile, keep an eye on your mailbox for your new login. And thank you in advance for your patience.
