mast crutch extension M 15

I am going to extend the mast crutch on my 2002 vintage M15 you know the wooden one, I want to raise it so the mast when it rests on the crutch clears the sliding hatch when it slips into the base of the mast support on the deck. Anybody care to tell me what that new distance is from the top pindle to the bottom of the crutch circle? If I had to guess or eye ball it I'd say 12-18 inches and the 18 inches is the safer bet. I am thinking to splice a board between what I have now? And bolt through.
