M12 canoe paddle length

We've had our 1974 M12 for four days. So far we are just trying to do all we have to do to make the boat and trailer legal with the state. We moved the boat from a state that doesn't require title and registration for a M12 to a state that does. The boat is complete. We are gathering the things we need to take her out. Several of the M12 pictures I have found show a canoe paddle in the boat. Seems like a good idea. Any comments on length or material or design? Thanks.
