Sage 17 "Air Born" in Golden

Report: outside forum guidelines

We are pleased to say that the first production boat of Jerry Montgomery's new design, the Sage 17 "Air Born" is now back in Golden after a 2 week cruise in the San Juan's, a showing in Port Townsend and Eugene, Oregon as well as the Potter Yachter's "Cruiser Challenge" in Monterey, California. (The Potter group is a great group, fun people).

The boat performed well in all areas, a testament to Jerry Montgomery's design and building skill. They were good trials for us.

After much discussion with Jerry Montgomery, Dave, Gary O, Gail and I, we decided to make some adjustments to the design.

The centerboard was a few thousands of an inch too thick in the widest portion of the foil and did not easily go down. Poor Dave had to jump up and down in the cockpit to make it drop. We've repaired the centerboard and modified the mold so future boats will be fine.

Jerry Decided to add a few inches to the depth of the rudder which is being modified on Air Born and the new pattern will be used on future boats as well. Being a kick up runner, the added length will add control with no negative effects. Air Born was fitted with electrical, motor mount, a 2 HP Honda outboard (which worked well), a boarding ladder (highly recommended) as well as cushions, Potty, and other cruising gear. Jerry is a fuss-pot for detail and felt the added depth would be better with all of the cruising gear one will carry on the boat.

We added teak slats to the back of the settees as well.

Dave took Air Born for a custom fitting at the trailer manufacturer. Lot of nice improvements there as well.

Thanx much for the support and encouragement.
