the M15 reefs in this order -

main, main again, jib and if less sail is still needed turn downwind (see below), fly just the jib to the next safe anchorage!

the above order comes from the 'power' in the M15s rig comes from the main. the jib, IMO, is more for airflow control (in high winds) and a M15 will not point well if you sail on jib or main alone (i've tried).

the M17 uses more 'jib' to power the rig. my observations are folks reef the jib, then the main, main again, and then the jib again. roller reefing on a M17 is VERY useful as the boat does best in light airs if you run a 140-150 headsail.
