Hello all you Montgomeryites,
I just got back from the October Flotilla at Lake Mead. The October Flotilla all came about after we had approximately five Mead Madnesses that take place in April. The original Mead Madness was actually a Memorial for Gary "Doc" Hansen who was one of the major contributors to Trailer Sailor.
I always thought "Doc" started the Trailersailor Site but actually he was known for being one of the more articulate sailors with much information that he'd share with all the readers.
"Doc" had two favorite places to sail. Lake Mead and to Catalina Island. In May of 2000, he had cruised Lake Mead for a week and then the following month he took his MacGregor Venture to Catalina where he suffered a stroke and after being in a coma for seventeen days, passed away.
In April of 2001, his widow Mary and many family members and followers of Trailersailor participated in a Memorial for Gary at Lake Mead. That began an annual event called "Mead Madness." From there we added the October Flotilla and both events combine a little casual racing and a week long cruise of the lake.
Why do I bring all this up when my Subject is the Poker Run? Because the true joy of this event, other than getting together with nice people, is the cruising and spending nights in secluded coves.
I would like to participate in the Poker Run. But several nights in a hotel room doesn't appeal to me. I get enough hotel room time during the year. Now, anchoring in coves or even spending nights in a slip at the marina sounds much better to me.
So, my question is would it be possible to participate in the Poker Run and other events and stay off-site?
I am also attaching a photo taken Tuesday, October 13 when the projected wind speed would hit 20-25 with gusts to 30. I was on a beam to broad reach and after this photo was taken had the best sailing since I started sailing in July of 1980. I know, quite a statement but true! As they say, it was an E Ticket ride!
