I also am inexperienced with this boat. I bought my N17 8 months ago, my first sail boat, and have been restoring it since. I did manage to get two fair days of sailing it in the fall after much temporary work, mostly cosmetic save for the repair of the keel.
YES, I can see the transom from the inside of the cabin, under the seats and the hull back there is filled with bits and pieces of foam in the sloppiest of manner. I wonder, did the original manufactuer design and build it so? The foam is not affixed in any way that I can see. I do like things tidier and wonder what I should do there. I have attempted to crawl in there to access the bolts that hold the motor mount on the transom, but at 69 years of age and 210 lbs I simply managed to freak myself out and am now trying to convince one of my thinner sons to crawl in! My other option is to make access panels in the seats so that the I could work on the transom and also have removeable storage bins under the seats. I don't know if this would compromise the integrety of the hull and so I am still studying the issue. This was put in the form of a question to this forum some months ago, but no one responded to it so I am moving slowly on it Pat in Vermont
