Neptune 24 keel question

I just became the owner of a Neptune 24 shoal draft. There is evidence of the cast iron keel swelling, has anyone addressed this issue? The boat was moored in salt water but will now be a fresh water boat. I got the boat for a song and am able to handle any fix-it project so I am not concerned about "cost of repair" since it is a labor of love. Somewhere I saw a thread about replacing the iron with lead but I am not able to find it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
