Water Coming in Through Centerboard Trunk?

Report: outside forum guidelines

I just bought a 1972 Newport 16. The first time I took it out I ended the day with about 5 gallons of water in the bilge. This was in moderate chop and 15 knot winds. There was no appreciable spray coming over the side. When I came back the next day with a bilge pump there was considerably less water there; maybe a gallon and a half. In light wind that day there was no further accumulation. Is this normal in other's experience?
