Replacing Steering Cable on Newport 28

Report: outside forum guidelines

We sailed our 1976 Newport 28 for the first time last Friday, and the steering cable/bracket gave way about 20 feet from our dock. The bracket was so corroded that it has to be replaced. Any info from anyone who has experience with this? We'd greatly appreciate some guidance. My husband is up to his elbows with the project. He is a tool designer, so he has some idea, but we're wondering about the installation, and how to feed the cables back through. Thanks.
