David, I use a 28 lb. thrust trolling motor on my Newport 16. The battery is located in the cabin, with the connection run to the rear of the cockpit for convenience. The battery is a deep cell, marine battery. I don't know how long it runs because I have not drained the battery. I charge it the night before sailing and it lasts at least for the day. I think the motors cost less than $500.00. Mine was included when I bought the boat. I hope this helps. Ben
