I currently own a Paceship 17 to which I've added a mast hinge above the deck [cut mast still in place from deck to keel], added nav lights, and have refitted with all Harken blocks to make it respond at least something like a sailboat. It's a real hoot for the guys to go out for an afternoon and bring in at night, and I've taught a few land-lubbers to actually sail. In all probablity, it fits the same general role as the Newport 17, less the cabin.
I have a deal - a really good deal - waiting for me on a Newport 17 if I want it. After I sell the Paceship it should be about an even swap financially. Besides higher freeboard and a below-deck area of sorts, what would compel me to swap the 1973 P-17 for a 1976 N-17? I know this is a Newport list and that some prejudice toward your boat will find its way in here but please tell me your thoughts. For that matter, tell me what to look for that's specific to the N-17, when I go to survey it. Assume both in about the same mechanical shape as to hull, lines, sails, gelcoat.... The N-17 is the swing-keel model.
The question is in regards to handling, comfort, speed, tendancy to flip over (or to resist same), single-handling, and general useability as compared to each other alone. I appreciate the thoughts of people on this board.
