On my N24 i have the same construction as kevin with 3/4 in. plywood creating a 3 sided box around the daggerboard shaft/trunk that "supports" the mast. Although on my boat the bottom of this box has rotted and in no way is supporting much weight.
I also took out the headliner that was on my cabin top and noticed that there is a gap between the cabin roof and the top edge of the bulkhead. basically there isn't much supporting the deck or mast on my boat. That being said. I have been sailing 1 1/2 seasons in some strong blows with virtually no support and the mast hasn't fallen through the cabin yet.
I'm in the process of rebuilding this frame around the centerboard and after that is finished the mast should have more support. I plan on making a solid "beam" of wood that is wedged between the centerboard trunk and under the mast and finishing off the frame with plywood.
