I had a 1970 Newport 16 (same as G16) for 7 years and it was my favorite boat I ever owned (family just outgrew it). I always was impressed with how it sailed despite ancient sails (something I could not say about my Sanibel 18 with new sails).
I talked with a woman who had both the C16 and G16 and she said the G16 sailed far better, which would match with my comparisons to the Sanibel.
Having said that the C16 may be a bit better made. For example the cabin on at least the N16 often gets cracks because the whole rig loads the cabin (no compression post or backstay). I think G16s might have the backstay. I did really like not having the post and liked the N16 interior -removable hatch gave infinite headroom and alloed taking jib down from the cabin if needed.
For me the choice is clear: get a G16 if you can find one.

Eric
