I have been in the boat business for 25 years as broker, captain and service tech and have owned three Compac 16s. They are well built, very stable boats. The centerboard and swing keel boats may point higher and give better performance since they are lighter, but the Compac 16 is more seaworthy.
Do an internet search. A friend from Ft Lauderdale sailed one from Florida to Great Inagua and back. There have been many folks who made the 75 mile crossing from Key West to the Dry Tortugas and frequent Gulf Stream crossings to the Bahamas. So it depends on what you want to do with it. If performance is your highest criteria go with a lighter boat. If you are more concerned with seaworthiness and safety get the Compac 16. The Compac is dollar for dollar the most fun, low-maintenance boat(s) I have ever owned.
