I have a recent model 5 hp briggs. Good motor....BUT(!!!!!!) it doesn't have a tilt position(!) for a very good reason:
Oil will fill the carb and leak out of the engine if it is tilted! That means you will have to live with leaving the motor somewhat in the water depending on your motor mount. Also, you will have tio transport it in the same manner (upright). Be sure you mount it on the boat as square as possible as even a little tilt will cause the oil problem.
It is easily remedied by unscrewing the bolt that holds the bowl on the carb and draining out as much oil as possible before starting it. It will smoke for a while but will eventually clear up.
also.....if the plug doesn't fire, the motor will be almost impossible to pull start. It freeses up I think due to compression in the cylinder. If you can't pull the starting rope, take out the plug and pull it to see if you're getting spark. It saves a lot of aggrevation!
