Is $5k supposed to be expensive? I does not seem that bad. I figure if I had a structural failure of some kind in the trailer, I would be looking at at least that much in repairs/liability. If I could obtain a new aluminum trailer, with "all the bells and whistles" for $5k delivered to the West Coast, I would order it today.
