I have always wanted some method of raising the motor clear of the water or at least above the bottom of the motor well so that the drag when sailing would be eliminated and if I could get it high enough it would be clear of the water while on the mooring. I at one time thought that a vertical plate lift like you sometimes see on fishing boats for trim purposes would work if I could find one that is not to much of an offset. I have never found such an animal but have not completely given up on the thought. I think you will find the bottom of the well is fiberglass and is screwed to the bottom with short SS screws. I had to cut the opening in the bottom a little larger when I got the new motor. I tried not to make it any larger than is absolutely necessary but just enough to remove the motor.
I still think that some kind of manual lift could be made to lift the motor straight up enough at least to eliminate the drag while sailing by removing the clamp section on the motor and substituting a slide device. I don't really have an answer to this but you have brought the thought processes back to mind. Perhaps some bright idea will come to one of us, I hope so.
