The plastic, stainless steel and brass units all use the same center core---only the outer surround is different. If you still have the old brass surround, you may want to just buy the plastic unit (which is cheaper) and switch the surrounds--held in place with three small screws. By the way, many times these units appear "dead" when all they need is a new nicad "C" cell batter from Radio Shack... or perhaps just clean the battery contacts with a pencil eraser.
