Gene, I started with the NE Ropes soft spun 3 strand dacron. It doesn't have the glossy surface of most synthetic ropes. For dye I used Minwax Early American Oil wood stain; pour the stuff into a shallow dish pan and immerse the rope for 15-20 minutes, stirring gently. The messy part is the rinse. Rinse the excess stain out with naphtha. This step takes quite a while and really ought to be done outside. If you don't get enough stain out, the rope will be stiff when dry. I dried mine in the sun. Try some on some scrap lengths first. BTW, Todd Bradshaw over on the WoodenBoat Forum wrote about this method so it's not really my invention. Rick
