Brent, It was my intent to "semi-permanently" attach the clew of the mizzen to the mizzen sprit. I saw no reason to be taking that apart routinely--since, when furling the mizzen, I just fold up the sprit and sail and tie against the mizzen mast.
The hardware you are describing is indeed a u-shaped strap with holes. What IS missing is a small pin and split-ring. I cannot imagine how that might have come loose. Just find another pin that fits through those holes, and you'll be back in business. Of course you could just tie the clue to the sprite with some small stuff, but I thought my u-strap looked a bit tidier. I'm quite sure most sailors have at least a half dozen different solutions lurking in their spare hardware box.
Did you ever figure out the pulley/bracket/flagpole assist for zipping up the mizzen cover? I drew a diagram of it on one of the sail bags... a real Rube Goldberg contraption if ever there was one. Whenever I went to the trouble of furling the mizzen (which is not much trouble at all) I always pulled up the zippered cover.
I hope you are enjoying Morgan Truce.
