Actually, they're bolts with #3 phillips heads rather than screws. They're backed with big washers, so they're a whole lot more secure than just screwing into the cored layup (which seems like a very bad idea). Mine were bent to varying degrees, so I'm going to swap them out anyway.
Don't know if there's any advantage to replacing them with hex heads except maybe if you just had to do it by yourself you might could tie a wrench in place on the outside while you squeezed down the lazerette to [un]do the nuts. I was afraid to crawl down in there without a helper to grab me by the ankles and drag me out. Ended up getting someone much smaller to do the inside work. Next night I was under her house in the dark (and mud and spiders and insulation) snaking out a clogged drain pipe, so she got the better end of that deal.
