To be honest I can't believe how heavy these rudders were made. Now that I have had a chance to really look at the rudder broken in half it confirmed alot of things to me. The rudder is not filled with foam . It is filled with a masonary type mixture , similiar to pour rock or hydrolic cememnt. I think they simply built a 2 sided hinged mold then poured this mixture in the mold. The mixture would then harden, the mold striped & the whole thing wrapped in glass. i half expected to see a stainless rod running vertically up the rudder to add strenth. There was nothing even backing the area where the pintals attach. This rudder is HEAVY and sank like a rock. I think the plywood will be a happy medium. I just picked up a piece $ 82.00. I'll let you know how things go/thanks
