Steve, I would not think twice about using the mizzen sail. In heavy winds I use it along with the jib ( jib & jigger ) with out the main sail It keeps the boat flat & cuts down on the famous Nimble weather helm. When I'm anchored or moored overnight I pull it in tight and it keeps the boat straight into the wind so it minimizes the back and forth drift. I agree, do a search and you will find acouple of differant ways to rig it
