In an era when these corporations are making huge record profits, there is little reason not to tax those profits above the former margins.
I also disagree that oil companies have been returning a large percentage of those record profits to stock holders. Since I happen to own stock in two major oil companies, I believe I know what I'm talking about.
In general I think that taxing any company's earnings is a bad idea; that money is usually returned right back into the money-go-round that is our national economy. In this case, it would be easy to make the case that less of these profits are being returned... all you have to do is read a few headlines...
