going back to my Marshall Dillon analogy...there was so much trouble in Dodge(?) that the good Marshall made everybody check their guns at his office as a condition of being in town...He was hired to keep the peace and felt that it was impossible for him to do that with everybody walking around with a gun hanging on their belts. Just doin' his job???
So the "Marshall" of DC has decided that it's impossible to keep the peace (keep citizens safe) with everybody walking around with guns (and witness the widespread opinion that DC is such a "bad" place that you HAVE to pack a gun).
It would seem to me that the fixation with the Bill of Rights and the idea that it superseeds everything else NO MATTER WHAT is very much a double edge sword. On the one hand it guarantees some things FOREVER (good thing) but it also garantees that some things that might really need to change...(and who could imagine that some things would not need changing after a couple of hundred years) won't (bad thing?). Got to take the good with the bad??? It's all very interesting...
