The Supreme Court decision didn't, either. The government puts limits on my right to live out my natural lifespan through a constitutional death penalty. I can't think of a clearer way to acknowlege rights have limits, or to suggest that rights should be limited only with care.
Were an Army unit to start gunning down citizens on street corners that sounds like just cause to return fire, however ineffective. That's crazy, of course, and it's not going to happen.
I'm not going to contract the thankfully extinct smallpox virus, either. I still like the idea of being able to produce a smallpox vaccine. An armed population is a great innoculation against tyranny.
But, like I also said, it's interesting the way the Second Amendment debate brings out larger issues. I do not agree with Justice Stevens that First Amendment rights to petition the government are 'primarily collective.'
I was taught the government goes to lengths to protect minorities, and the ultimate minority is the individual. Stevens is off his rocker.
Could be I am, too.
