We live 7 miles out of town. We moved here in the summer. Just as soon as winter came and the vegetation was gone, I realized how much trash was on the road. Sharon and one other couple, but mostly me, cleaned up all of the trash all of the way to town. I have no idea, how much time I spent, but it took several weeks. As I would clean a portion, I would go back and clean up the parts that I had already cleaned. The person I bought the house from said it was a waste of time and one neighbor in particular would wonder why I would try to undo something which had taken him years to accomplish.
Unfortunately, he was right. Within a couple of weeks, you couldn't tell I had done anything. It seemed like the people resented this new comer coming in and cleaning up their mess.
Since then I pick up the mile from our house to town. I spend an hour or so every month or two to clean it up.
I started this effort during the Clinton administration. It has not changed into the Bush administration, as you might expect.
I supose that somewhere you might be able to tell the difference, but in my part of the world, the polution is no worse now than during Clinton.
