Personally, I have no problem with gun ownership by responsible adults. My dog in the hunt is exactly similar to Obama's, that guns not get into the hands of children.
Our area has its share of children shot and killed, another just two weeks ago. I'd be for felony charges against the owner of any weapon not secured and involved in a shooting by a minor. Such a charge wouldn't have to carry significant fines or imprisonment, the goal would be to remove the right for that person who has demonstrated an inability to responsibly own an arm. Perhaps states can make such a misdemeanor charge that excludes the right to ownership rather than it being a felony charge.
My big concern is that such a law is penal and will only have a partial effect at securing arms from children.
