In the sixties. There are ebb and flows of movement that project acceptance. Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley fought hard to argue that conservative thought was needed to correct the course that America was on. The riots, assassinations and Viet Nam war had left a serious identity crisis on America and conservative thought was believed by them as well as Reagan to be something the nation needed a serious dose of and I believe they were right. The threat of Communism, corrupt labor unions, and out of control welfare dependency loomed. Civil rights and womens liberation were pushed hard sometimes on a nation not ready for the drastic changes that they brought and in the end, it all was more than some could absorb and conservatism became a refuge.
There were also resentments, especially in the South. The South had really never gotten over the Civil War and resentment was a part of its culture. It was no shake for operatives to redirect that resentment to liberals who were tied to labor unions that provided an easy job for a Yankee where the Southerner had to labor hard for less pay. It was easy for Southerners who were far more evangelical to fall into judgment about values issues and to resent forced busing and affirmative action programs.
It takes no effort to understand why liberal became a dirty word... it represented change that wasn't appreciated. That said, liberal represents change and sometimes it is drastically needed. We very much need a comprehensive energy policy that will provide a way into the 21st century. We very much need to examine our possible destruction of our environment and save our planet if man is destroying nature's balances. We very well need economic rules to prevent economic destructive greed from siphoning basic pursuit of family life from the citizenry to prevent anarchy.
To reach these goals will require some maturity that is lacking when we name call each other. There is no question that conservatives and liberals come at issues from differing perspectives but I've seldom seen the time when one is all right and the other all wrong.
As you know from my past writings, I've claimed that liberals more often get themselves into problems simply because problems come with new turf. That does not mean however that we should castigate liberal thought because it has a potential to stumble in a bad direction. In fact, it is a much needed commodity. You know that I've also claimed that the Neo Cons are not conservatives but rather far right liberals and that the sin of the republicans that has ruined the brand temporarily is that they gave them a free pass rather than do what conservatives normally do well... question liberal actions.
Peace
Calling each other names, demonstrates an immaturity incapable of the task ahead.
