Hi everyone, I bought HMS 18 Potter #2 from International Marine about two weeks ago. I trailered her back to Mesa Arizona, and am trying to get her ready for sailing at the local Arizona lakes. Future plans to the Sea of Cortez maybe this winter.
I am trying to figure out the best way to handle the keel raising. It appears there was a old manual winch fastened to a board that was centered on the roof above the keel. A cover plate is then removed and the line from the winch let out until it can be connected with a quick snap to a eye bolt on the keel.
Then the line is let out by hand (no brake on the winch) until the keel is fully down.
The winch is terribly rusted and will need to be replaced.
Are there any other recommendations from early HMS potter 18 owners on how they raise/lower the keel?
I spent the weekend scrubbing the dirt/debris off #2 (still trying to think of a appropriate name). I went to West Marine and got a gallon of antifouling paint and rolled 3 coats on the bottom.
I will start sanding the sides (I am thinking of a hunter green color) before I start on the interior.
I will try to get pictures uploaded shortly to show what I am working with. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Many Thanks!
