A mast gate is a removable cover for the wide space in the mast slot that you need to feed the sail slugs into the slot. Once the slugs are in, the wide spot isn't needed, and covering it up allows you to drop the sail without all the slugs coming out. A sail stop does the same thing, except on many boats (P19 included) it is usually necessary to remove the sail stop when reefing so the cringle can reach the hook on the gooseneck.
Making a mast gate that fits the P19 mast properly is a fussy job. I finally did it last season, when I got tired of messing with (and occasionally losing) the sail stop for six years. Some 1/16" x 1" or so aluminum stock is required, and if it sort of follows the curve of the mast cross section, you are that much ahead of the game. As far as I know there are no drawings of such a thing; you just have to cut and try until it's right. The fancy ones are hinged. Simple ones can attach to the mast with screws, but they are more trouble if you want to remove the sail frequently.
