I sail with a group in FL (West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadron) and in our last outing (3 days at Cayo Costa) there was a forecast for Sunday (last day) of 20 knots winds from the NE. The guy that is sort of a commodore for the group, recommended an early pull out on Saturday because it was going to be less enjoyable to make the 7 miles back to the ramp (from Cayo Costa - through Charlote Harbour - to Bokelia). These are shallow waters and they get very choppy when you mix the wind and tidal currents. The “commodore” has a great responsibility and we should not make him things difficult…if he says that it would be advisable to pull out, I will.
I am new to the group and their policy is self responsibility. We operate as a group but each should be self responsible. Under this premise, reluctantly I decided I should sail back Saturday after only one night at Cayo Costa. Some bigger boats (Telstar 28, Mac26Xs, SeaPearl 28, Precision, Compac, and others) stayed for almost a week and I am sure that I could have stayed too and return on Monday or even Sunday with high wind...however, I thought that it was prudent for me to return early and not to risk anybody else of the group while trying to navigate in this waters with 20 knots in the nose.
Anyway, I do like the idea of analyzing the capsize to learn lessons. I also think that you guys have to support this new and enthusiastic sailor trying to avoid him quitting sailing...many people get really scared after an episode like this. Also, I would recommend that if you don't sail together all the time, at least have a channel that all the group checks (besides 16) so that everybody knows what's going on. Last, I would say that all people should wear a PFD. I sometimes do not wear it when is really calm but I should.
I will look forward to reading next PY newsletter (you are doing a very nice job on them Jerry!).
Best to all! Jose P15 #2045 "Witty"
