I'm not the best at this, but I'd say 90% of the time I have a float plan filed with my wife. It's a general plan, "I'm launching at Grand Ave around 10 Am, heading to Clipper Cove and hope to be off the water by 4:30." It might be a copy of the newsletter and showing her specifics of that sail.
She knows conditions and plans change frequently. If the change is dramatic like, the ramp was closed so I ended up launching in Richmond, I'll call her prior to casting off. I will also call her when I get back to the ramp as I have seen many of us do. Again, this won't save me if something really bad happens but it does give her an idea where to ask to Coast Guard to look for the body. If Steve Fossett had filed a flight plan, it may not have taken a year to find his remains.
The link below takes you to a template for a USPS float plan. It's a bit over the top for my use, but it gives you an idea of what kind of information is good to leave behind.
