I saw this one (Hawaiian Chieftain?) in the morning soon after we left China Basin. It was far away, apparently near Alameda. (This photo was max zoom and then enlarged.) I didn't hear the cannon or see a second ship, but they do frequently have such mock battles in the Bay, sometimes in the South Bay outside Redwood Creek.

One day I was returning to the launch ramp at Redwood City and sailed past the Hawaiian Chieftain, which was anchored at the Port. I circled the ship once to get a closer look, admiring the miles of rope all perfectly arranged. As the crew of the ship looked on, I then attempted to lower my single lateen sail only to find the halyard was fouled. Aargh! I had to grab handfulls of sail and pull hard to overcome the halyard friction and get the sail down. Not one of my prouder moments. I hope I only imagined the laughter coming from the tall ship.
