Rear sheeting cleating problem

Monday I went out in my P14 on the Gunpowder river heading out toward the Chesapeake with a friend. Great wind and sailing. Heard some occasional whistling in the shrouds!! I recently changed to the factory style end of boom sheeting and the only challenge we had was that sitting far forward in the cockpit (where the boat handled best) I had a very hard time getting the main to release and I could find no way to keep it from being cleated on the cam cleat. Has anyone found a solution for this. In general I like the end of boom but in heavy weather it does not seem the safest setup. Would it work to attach a block on the tiller to run the sheet through so it would not cleat? If so where on the tiller would work best?
