As I remember there is a nut/bolt through the middle of the cleat block. Loosening that I saw pins and holes and by moving down one hole/pin it changed the angle to stop that "auto cleating" you are experiencing. It's been 3 or 4 years since I did this, but I do remember having the same issue. My first attempt at adjusting it was done on the water and resulted in an expensive but small splash.
