I cut my teeth sailing San Francisco bay back in the very early 70 on a 28 foot Columbia with NO engine. Before that the family always had power boats so I thought I knew everything. I won't go into all the close calls I had except one when I was coming back from Angle island and was just coming out of the lee of Alcatraz in winds of maybe 15 plus knots. I got hit by one of those big guys that can demast a boat and when I tried to reef my "single" reefing system it didn't work as it should because I had never reefed before. No engine, big wind, out of control, and a small boat in the middle of the bay. A passing fishing boat turn around and headed to help me. However I managed to get the main sail down (all over the deck and in the water) so only the working jib was up. If I not gotten the main down there probably would have been a mast failure or worse. It was the best thing that ever happened to me because I learned that I didn't know POOP about sailing and spent the next several months sailing with others and learning all I could. You will be just fine and your skills will improve much more quickly now that you know the limits of your boat. Hey, and you still have a sailing season to hone your skills. So go on sailing and have fun.
