I became a much better sailor after I dumped Tetra. And, Tetra's previous owner capsized her as well--completely turtling her. It's not a great experience. But, as a wise man once told me, it makes for a great "teachable moment".
When I put myself into my mess, I did so knowing that I was playing the percentages and I just hoped for the best. I was trying to keep up with some faster boats, had way too much sail up and relied on luck to get me through a tricky channel in bad conditions. I've now learned my lesson. I could have tacked away from that trouble and given myself some time to think about my options, but instead just plowed ahead. I now know better now. Sailing is not about luck, it's about physics.
I now know where the boat's limits are and now so do you. Get back on that horse and you'll do so as a better skipper.
