Depending on the season, but certainly in winter season sailing beginning about now, your life expectancy in SF Bay varies from about 30 to 90 minutes if you are in the water. Basically that's the time to lose consciousness and after that it is downhill quickly. I measured water temperatures around 46 degrees on several sails last year and it was clear I needed to stay out of the water.
Given that we seem to lose a number of people in the Bay and nearby coastal area due to accidents and weather related exposure every winter I second the sentiment of avoiding hypothermia at all costs. My one experience with it last year was just from getting wet and wind-blown in a gale when I failed to put all my foul weather gear on before I needed it. I'm not likely to make that mistake again.
