They told me the same thing, but effective immediately, back in May when I returned from Cedar Key. I did have the good fortune to get 20 weeks severance which kept me going until mid-October. The biggest problem so far is time! I can't seem to get started before 10 and that's when I get up early.
On the good side I did get my Marblehead r/c model completed in time for an r/c sailing class at WoodenBoat School and took another class while I was up there. I also made two long weekend trips and my annual trip to Saint Michaels for the Small Craft Festival. No increased amount of full sized sailing though. I did however make quite a few trips down to Solomons for Wednesday morning model sailing followed by lunch with the group.
All in all it has worked out well for me so far. My sailing model Skipjack will come off the forms this weekend and maybe the start of a winter project model boat using mostly parts on hand. It seems that there is always something to do, but not necessarily what I had planned.
Enjoy your retirement, you have earned it!
