Speaking as one who has used an autopilot on a larger boats, I'm wondering if we are missing the weakness of all autopilots - the inability to predict the boat's response to given sea and wind conditions and to be proactive. Additionally, no autopilot will set our boat up properly for a given set of conditions. It will only be able react to our skill or lack thereof in sail trim and sail plan balance. It will be difficult at best for any autopilot to handle an off wind course in heavier wind if the sail plan is not balanced between main and jib and each sail is flattened accordingly. I often see larger boats struggling with heavy air off wind conditions under main alone - and the main is not even flattened properly!! Adding an autopilt to this mix will only aggravate the entire situation.
A properly set up P15 will often sail with little or no attention to the helm. Remember also that the P15's centerboard can be raised slightly to help balance the helm off wind. Beyond that, a good system of sheet to tiller self steering can be set up easily. I admit to being an old goat about such things, but 40 years in sail have taught me that we cannot replace boat handling skills with gadgetry without a whole raft of unintended consequences. Dave
