All right Dan and Steve, points well taken. Dan, make room for Steve and I on your couch! Chris, please excuse my possible over reaction, BUT my point is that there are many issues involving autopilots that may not be apparent at first glance to members of this forum. I was especially commenting on the discussion regarding use in heavier conditions off wind which is the downfall of most units that I have used. Regarding power consumption, please realize that an autopilot will use much more energy fighting an ill trimed boat, and as its attempts to compensate grow more and more extreme, there is a great possibility of taking the boat into an accidental gybe. Additionally, many units are very sensitive to voltage. Our Tartan 34's CPT did not work well if the voltage fell below 12.5, but was otherwise a great unit. My intent was to bring up these issues that impact the overall use and performance of autopilots. Beyond that, consider my musings as those of an old goat who treasures the hard won skills of boat handling and sail trim and who continues to try to improve. Dave
