John,
I think that you would love Cedar Key. I am not aware of any slip althought there might be some.
Most people drop their boats and about half of them retrieve them on the evening and the other half beaches them for the night in a very small beach in front of the condo where many of them stay (it's getting crowded latley). Others just go to one of the islands, mostly Atsena Otie Key (half mile off) and sleep in their boats. We have been renting a room as I have kids and they enjoy the pool also.
The best of Cedar Key is that there is no schedule...there is no organization but it gathers 60-70 families and their boats every year! Many of those boats are made by their owners and many of those are splashed the first time at Cedar Key.
It really starts on Friday and if you want to enjoy it you should plan on stay from Fri morning to Sun evening. Friday night there is some kind of reception at some local’s house but I have not assisted yet. Saturday noon everybody gets to Atsena Otie Key beach and just chat about boats...you will not have enough time to enjoy the variety of boats there! Saturday evening we gather in Cedar Key for either a barbeque or something of that nature. Sunday the crowd thins out. Actually I really enjoyed the best sailing on Sundays because the other days you will find yourself mostly chatting with other people about their boats. We have been tremendously lucky with the weather as it has been marvelous for the last years. Overall, It's an event in shallow waters, some channels, with three nice islands to explore (4-5 miles out), a picturesque town, and the best camaraderie from the small sailboat community that comes from as far as Michigan or even further.
I love chatting with people that love boats...one guy was saying this year to me...oh! I am glad that here people don't think I am crazy because I love sailboats that much.
Cedar Key has many hotels that would rent you a room and plenty of restaurants on the gulf side. There is a neat place to have breakfast that many of us enjoy tremendously.
Come, you will love it. From GA is just a leap. Regards, Jose
