This is where the meal is mixed in a foil "pocket" and heated by placing the pocket in close proximity to an open fire. It is a great way to prepare stews or dishes with rice; anythin with good moisture content. Pasta can also be prepared in a pocket. I taught this method of cooking at a Boy Scout camp I worked at some years back. Pockets can be placed directly on the burner of a small gas stove as might be used for back-packing. I used to tease folks that I could cook rice on an open fire without the use of pots or pans . . . Pocket Cooking.
Canned foods can be heated sealed in the can. Simply immerse the can in boiling water. Caution! Don't allow the water to boil away; the can WILL explode. The can is safe as long as it gets no hotter than the boiling water. This is great way to heat soups, chilly, etc.
Combining these methods would simplify the galley on any small boat and limit clean-up as well. One can eat directly from the can or pocket which can then be disposed of without washing when the meal is done. . . as Ray said . . . be creative.
