Hi Charley,
You only have to tilt the motor facing forward to disengage it. Once it is free of the friction lock you can turn it to the side. Even then you may need to add 3/4" of height to the motor mount to let the motor clear the stern enough to lock the motor in the up position. Suggest you try this before succumbing to the natural temptation to grind on the motor's locking lever.
