Your IDA winds are not unusual up here on the northern Great Lakes. East winds to 61 mph on the 23rd Oct. and 34 years ago the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk in a gale on Lake Superior. To view a video of the 15-17 ft. waves in the Straits of Mackinac go to www.stignacenews.com and click on Videos and watch the video of the ferry boat crossing to the Island and then to St. Ignace.
