Before Robert Manry crossed the Atlantic solo in the Potter-size Tinkerbelle, his only "ocean" sailing experience was on Lake Erie. Apparently he was well prepared by that experience.
I grew up in Kansas City, MO, far from any large bodies of water. On a trip to Toledo, Ohio, I was taken to the shore of Lake Erie. I remember seeing smoke from the funnels of ships that were out of sight, over the horizon. That sure looked like an ocean to me.
