In Response To: Lazy Jacks on a Lateen Rig (pic) (Manny Rubin)

Hi Manny. I hastily set up Lazy Jacks for Sea Bug's Lateen rig last summer. What I did was I added a pad-eye on the front of the mast and one under the boom at about the same locations you used for yours. I used parachute cord and made a simple loop that goes around the front of the mast and underneath the boom. I can't remember the name of the knot I used, but it is similar to a trucker's hitch that allows for adjustment of the length of the rope. Perhaps someone knows which knot this is. The use of the Lazy Jack has made an already simple set-up even simpler. However, my design lacks long term reliability as the rope will surely be damaged at several points where it contacts the sharp edges of the metal and of course where knots are made. Good quality para-cord seems like a good choice for strong, lightweight lazy jack line. I used black so that it stands out from the sail and is easy to notice when it is tangled or needs attention..

I haven't even come close to figuring out how to reef. I have two sails; a 75 square foot Sunfish and an 85 foot Dolphin. So far, I plan to use the 75 for frigid water and mountain sailing (the two go together usually), regardless of the wind conditions. But I guess I should figure out the reefing. Your picture would not open, and I'd sure like to study your set-up.
